VMBC Mobile Connection: Battle of the Mobile Operating Systems

The team over at hunch has put together a comparison infographic of how 15,000 people feel about their phones.

Interesting facts like how Android users are 12% more likely to own pets or how 50% of iOS users are more likely to have used the internet prior to 1992.

The battle is on between Android and iOS. Read the blog to see how you measure up on the infographic.

VMBC Mobile Connection: Mitigating Risk In Uncertain Times

At VMBC, we believe that innovation is what will drive our success moving forward.

We believe that utilizing new technologies to increase productivity and reduce the cost of administration is the path to competing and winning on a global basis. And we are planting the seeds for the next phase in our business cycle by focusing on our ability to drive this technical innovation.

VMBC Mobile Connection: How Apple Helped HTML5 Dethrone Flash

With the announcement last week that Adobe is launching Adobe Edge, a new set of tools that will allow developers to create animated web content using HTML5, CSS, Java Script and, not Flash, it makes you think about the future of Flash, and even more, what the language of web animation will look like in the coming years.

VMBC Mobile Connection: Getting Started with Mobile Coupons

For all of the very real advantages offered by the mobile platform, mobile-specific couponing seems to be an area that is still posing significant obstacles for many retailers.

The challenge, as we see it, is the ability to fuse the three distinct elements of a great mobile coupon promotion - the Strategy, the Offer and Fulfillment - without "skimping" on any of them.

The following looks at ways to get your feet wet with an initial mobile coupon test program.

VMBC Mobile Connection: Three Steps To Creating QR Success

It seems like few mobile marketing tools see as much disparity between the press they get and the number of actual success stories you hear about at retail as do QR codes.

Here at VMBC, we talk to retailers every week who seem frozen in the QR headlights, afraid to do anything for fear of making the wrong choice.

In an effort to help get you moving forward, the following is a simple three-step process designed to help you identify a viable QR code partner and design your own in-store program.

VMBC Mobile Connection: NFC, or Near Field Communications

Despite all the stunning projections for how big the market for mobile transactions will grow over the next several years, a simple uniform system for purchasing via the handset has remained a significant roadblock.

But with the growing acceptance of a technology called NFC as the single technical standard for processing mobile payments, mobile commerce seems to have hit its tipping point this year.

NFC, or Near Field Communications, is a technology that allows for short-wave wireless communication back and forth between two NFC sensors placed near each other.

VMBC Mobile Connection: Apps on Your Smartphone

I was reading a research piece this week detailing how smartphone users in the U.S. are now spending more time engaged with mobile apps than they do with desktop and mobile web browsing combined.

This is almost double the amount of time they spent on apps a year ago.

When you dig a little deeper into the research, you see that almost half that time on apps was spent playing games, and that 43% was spent on social networking (basically twice the time a web browser is pointed to Facebook).

VMBC Mobile Connection: Location Based Services

As I mentioned briefly last week, we had an outstanding time at CRMC last week. We were pleased to host a well-attended roundtable discussion on the future of location-based services (LBS) on the mobile platform.

This is an area that we are spending more and more time focusing on for our retail clients. And it was great to see the reaction to the unveiling of our proprietary LBS SMS 2.0 platform, which has redefined the boundaries for LBS.

LBS 2.0 will allow clients to push location-based offers to opted-in customers on an automatic, ongoing basis, regardless of phone or carrier. No phone application, no internet connectivity, no check-in and no short code.

VMBC Mobile Connection: Apple iOS and how it will affect Apps

We've just returned from a fantastic week at the Customer Relationship Management Conference in Chicago, one of our favorite shows of the year.

The most exciting aspect of the show for us this year was finding partners with whom we can share ideas, share innovations and share clients to create completely new solutions in the mobile space. We'll talk more about our experiences at CRMC next week, but right now, I have Apple on the brain.

VMBC Mobile Connection: Launch

The new VMBC is here. New look. New logo. New site.

Come see what we have been up to. Like launching an app that debuted at No. 1 in the iTunes app store lifestyle section and stayed there for two weeks. Or how we created a SMS database of more than 8 million opt-in subscribers in less than a year.
