As someone who works in the Mobile Marketing Space, I of course am a huge proponent of mobile technology to help companies and brands of all sizes engage with their consumers through this channel and ultimately drive revenue. However, what I really love is that mobile serves a greater purpose. I feel that mobile enables the sharing of information, but most importantly mobile enables connections between people.
The reason I think mobile serves a greater purpose is two fold. First, in a recent session of the United Nations, Nassir Abdulaziz Al, president of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly, unveiled the UN mHealth App. He shared his vision and hopes for mHealth with the global community.
He spoke of people around the world, often in third world countries, now because of mobile technology having access to information and education that can help them manage their health. The United Nations May Be The Ultimate Driving Force For mHealth.
Second, Lance Armstrong recently launched an APP to help cancer patients. I read about it in this great article, Lance Armstrong To Launch Self-Tracking App For Cancer. So yes, mobile really does become about helping people connect and share information in a way that we never could have dreamed of even 5 years ago. It is all about your personal perspective, but for me it really is not too far from a greater purpose.
For me personally, this whole greater purpose thing and idea of mobile helping people connect was all brought to light a few weeks ago when I was traveling. It was just another business trip but this particular Sunday evening as I sat in Chicago O’Hare airport, I was feeling pretty down knowing that I was going to be missing my youngest daughter’s 10th birthday the following day.
There was not a lot I could do but I wanted to let her know in some way that I would be thinking of her. So as I sat at my gate waiting for my connecting flight to board I pulled out my iPhone and proceeded to search for “gifts to send a 10 year old girl”. I was very fortunate that my search returned a link to a florist, FromYouFlowers, that does unique arrangements.
My family had recently purchased a new white puppy that my daughter absolutely adores, and I found a floral arrangement in the shape of a little white puppy! It was perfect! I was able to complete the entire transaction on my phone in less than 10 minutes. The next day, while at a business meeting, I received not only pictures but a video message of my daughter’s smiling face thanking me for this wonderful gift. So you see, the transaction was all about mobile technology but the connection and smile from my 10 year old daughter…certainly fulfilled MY greater purpose.
